Fast Start, Mistakes, Warning Signs

Germany took the lead against Ecuador after less than two minutes – and still lost 2-1. They remain group winners, but ahead of the knockout stage the DFB team leaves more questions than answers.

Gonzalo Plata scores Ecuador’s 2-1 winner – handing Germany their first setback before the knockout stage.

The group win was already secured, the knockout stage booked, the opponent still unknown. Germany could have gone into their final group match against Ecuador with confidence and control. Instead, the World Cup final stadium in East Rutherford delivered the first real setback of their tournament: a 2-1 defeat after a dream start, too many mistakes and a second half that did little to build confidence before the do-or-die stage begins.

It all started perfectly. Less than two minutes in, Leroy Sané put Germany ahead. It was a lightning start – and also a controversial goal, as Aleksandar Pavlovic appeared to catch Pedro Vite with a high boot in the build-up. The goal stood. Germany were in front early, and the match seemed to be heading in the right direction.

But that sense of control did not last. In the ninth minute, Felix Nmecha lost the ball in the build-up, Ecuador moved quickly and Nilson Angulo struck from distance to make it 1-1. It was Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament – and the moment the game changed. The South Americans became sharper, more aggressive and more courageous. Germany, by contrast, gave the ball away too often, struggled for structure and increasingly had problems dealing with Ecuador’s energy.

After the break, Germany briefly looked as if they might regain control. Referee Tori Penso initially awarded a penalty after Kai Havertz went down in the box. But VAR intervened because Sané had committed a foul in the build-up. The penalty was overturned – correctly, but from a German perspective it was another interruption to their rhythm. Deniz Undav came on, later joined by Maximilian Beier and Pascal Groß, but Germany never really found a cutting edge.

Ecuador kept pushing. In the 78th minute, the decisive moment arrived: after a corner and a flick-on at the near post, Gonzalo Plata bundled the ball over the line from close range. Manuel Neuer and the German defence did not look convincing. It was not the first shaky moment of the evening – and that will probably concern Julian Nagelsmann more than the result itself.

In the table, little has changed for Germany. They still finish top of Group E despite the defeat, because Ivory Coast beat Curaçao 2-0 in the parallel match but remain behind Germany on goal difference. Ecuador move to four points with the win and also advance as one of the best third-placed teams. For Curaçao, the World Cup journey ends after three matches.

For Germany, the tournament now starts all over again. On Monday, the Round of 32 brings the first knockout opponent, still to be confirmed after all group matches are complete. From now on, there are no more calculations, no table comfort and no excuses. After the 7-1 win over Curaçao and the late 2-1 against Ivory Coast, Ecuador was a timely warning. For the ProXES betting competition, that means: anyone backing Germany to go deep may still be right – but this team is strong, not flawless.
