Big Names, Little Miracles – the Round of 16 Is Set
The Round of 32 is over and the last 16 are set. Germany and the Netherlands are out, Paraguay and Morocco are celebrating, all three host nations are still alive – and Cape Verde bowed out with a performance to remember against Argentina.

Cape Verde celebrate against Argentina: the World Cup debutants pushed the defending champions into extra time and bowed out with pride after a memorable performance.
Thirty-two teams entered the new knockout round, now only 16 remain. And the Round of 32 has already shown what this World Cup is all about: big names falling early, underdogs rising, favourites suffering – and sometimes one single penalty deciding everything.
For Germany, the tournament ended in bitter fashion. After a 1–1 draw against Paraguay, the penalty shootout had to decide it. Paraguay held their nerve, won 4–3 and produced one of the biggest upsets of this knockout round. The Netherlands also went out from the spot, losing 3–2 on penalties to Morocco. Two favourites out, two underdogs through – this new World Cup keeps reshaping the picture.
Things look very different for the host nations. Canada edged South Africa 1–0 and will now face Morocco. Mexico beat Ecuador 2–0 and will meet England in the Round of 16. The United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0 and now face Belgium in another huge home fixture. All three hosts are still in the tournament.
The major title contenders are still there too – but not all of them had it easy. Brazil beat Japan 2–1 and will now face Norway, who struck late to beat Ivory Coast 2–1. France gave Sweden no chance in a 3–0 win and will play Paraguay next. Spain eased past Austria 3–0, while Portugal beat Croatia 2–1. That sets up a European heavyweight clash in the Round of 16: Portugal against Spain.
The most emotional story, however, came once again from Cape Verde. The World Cup debutants pushed defending champions Argentina into extra time in Miami, came back twice and made Lionel Messi and Co. work for everything. The decisive goal only came in the 111th minute, sealing a 3–2 win for Argentina. Cape Verde are out, but they have certainly not failed. The “Blue Sharks” have written a story in their first World Cup that will be remembered.
Egypt also made history. Against Australia, it was 1–1 after 120 minutes before Mohamed Salah and his teammates converted their penalties with ice-cold precision. A 4–2 win in the shootout, Egypt’s first ever knockout victory at a World Cup – and now Argentina await. The Round of 16 is completed by Switzerland against Colombia: Switzerland beat Algeria 2–0, while Colombia defeated Ghana 1–0.
So the eight Round of 16 ties are set: Canada against Morocco, Paraguay against France, Brazil against Norway, Mexico against England, Portugal against Spain, USA against Belgium, Argentina against Egypt and Switzerland against Colombia. It is a round full of big names, little miracles and matchups very few would have predicted before the tournament.
For the ProXES betting competition, this also makes the team ranking even more exciting. Any betting team that wants to stay in the game now needs more than a few strong individual opinions. The tighter the matches get, the more important alignment becomes: clear assessments, well-understood signals and a shared feel for the right moment. Lone fighters rarely go far in knockout rounds – not on the pitch, and not in the betting table either.
